How to read a WPS before starting welding work

Check a WPS revision, applicability and its match with the assignment. A six-area reading map, mismatch examples and questions for practical training.

Reading a WPS starts with checking whether the document applies to the work ahead. Finding a familiar process and a few understandable values is insufficient. Connect the document with the material, joint, position and other assignment conditions. Resolve any mismatch before starting work.

WPS stands for Welding Procedure Specification. For a welder, it provides the specified conditions for carrying out the work. The reading route below can be discussed during training with an instructor. It contains no working WPS, production settings or permission to change the procedure independently.

How a WPS differs from other documents

A WPS describes welding variables and conditions. Documents supporting procedure qualification serve a different purpose: they concern the basis for its use and the results of the relevant testing. A welder qualification document concerns the individual. These documents cannot replace one another.

TWI’s explanation of welding procedures discusses the connection between a WPS, supporting documents and personnel qualification. For an initial understanding, retain the distinction: having a WPS does not automatically mean that anyone is qualified to perform the work it describes.

A WPS also does not replace the entire production assignment. Drawings, instructions and other documents may be required. Their content and relationship are determined by the production arrangements. If information conflicts, you should not choose whichever version is more convenient.

Step one: identify the document and its applicability

Find the WPS designation and revision information. Establish how this document has been assigned to the particular job. A similar file name or a familiar printout at the workstation does not confirm that it is current.

Ask two separate questions: “Is this the current revision?” and “Does it apply to my joint?” A current document may concern different work. Conversely, a familiar assignment does not make an outdated copy suitable.

If the confirmation process is unclear, ask the instructor or the company’s responsible specialist. Training should develop both the ability to find fields and the ability to recognise when information is insufficient to begin.

Step two: compare the main information with the assignment

Start with the process. Retain its exact number and designation instead of replacing it with a broad expression such as “semi-automatic” or “argon welding”. Check the material and joint information next. Consider it in relation to the specific component and drawing.

Then find the specified position, welding consumables and remaining conditions. A WPS may contain information about equipment, electrical parameters, sequence and temperature conditions. During training, the instructor explains how to read information relevant to the exercise and where to verify it.

This article lists groups of information without values. A missing field cannot be filled using a number from another WPS or a universal table. Even similar joints can have different conditions that significantly affect the document’s applicability.

A six-area learning map

The following is a hypothetical reading map, rather than a production WPS form. Working values and procedural instructions have deliberately been omitted.

Area What to find What question to check
Identification Number, revision and connection to the assignment Is the correct document being used?
Process Exact designation Does it match the assignment?
Material Specified material information Does the document apply to these components?
Joint Type, preparation and position Does the prepared work match the requirements?
Welding consumables Designations of the specified consumables Has the match been confirmed?
Working conditions Relevant parameters and sequence Is everything understood and achievable under the assignment?

Use the map to prepare questions during training. It does not list every possible mandatory field or establish the procedure qualification range. The format, content and requirements of a particular document must be addressed under the applicable rules.

A useful exercise is to explain each group of information in your own words without changing its meaning. If you can read a designation but cannot connect it with the component, that is a separate learning need. Preserve an unfamiliar designation exactly and ask for an explanation.

Step three: identify a mismatch before work

Consider a fictional training example. The worksheet specifies one process, but the learner finds another in the proposed WPS. Rather than choosing according to familiar equipment, the learner shows the mismatch to the instructor. The exercise tests careful comparison of documents, rather than guessing the required technique.

A second hypothetical case concerns a filler designation that cannot be matched with the prepared material. Similar packaging is not sufficient grounds for substitution. Establish the match before following the agreed assignment.

In a third case, the required field is understood, but the condition cannot be met using the available resources. This also needs to be raised with the responsible specialist. Independently changing the document or bypassing a requirement is not a suitable solution.

To record a mismatch, identify the information compared and where the question arose. Avoid an unsupported diagnosis such as “the WPS is wrong” before the cause is established. A precise observation is more useful to the specialist than a categorical conclusion.

Practising document reading

Training can connect WPS reading with a particular learning joint. First find the information, then explain the preparation required by the assignment. After the exercise, discuss which requirements were clear and where help was needed. The programme and instructor determine how this activity is organised.

Keep questions in three groups: an unfamiliar term, information that cannot be connected with the component, and conflicting information. Each needs a different next step. A term needs explanation, matching needs more context, and a conflict requires a decision by the responsible person.

Do not assess the skill solely by reading speed. Finding applicable information and noticing a mismatch are more important. Someone who quickly scans the document and starts working from habit has not yet demonstrated correct application.

The WKK basic training programme in Russian lists reading and applying WPS documents among its learning outcomes. This provides a basis for asking how the skill is practised and assessed. Listing an outcome does not imply a separate universal course covering every welding document.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an online WPS for a similar product?

Similarity does not establish applicability. The document must relate to the particular work and have the required basis for use. An online example can be discussed during training, but does not authorise welding a production joint.

Can a welder change an unclear condition independently?

Raise the discrepancy with the responsible specialist through the established process. Do not substitute a familiar technique or a value from another document. First obtain clarification and an agreed decision for the work.

Does having a WPS establish the welder's qualification?

No. The document concerns the procedure, while an individual's qualification is established separately within its relevant range. Consider the assignment requirements, qualification range and validity of applicable documents.

Where can I learn to read a WPS?

Look for this outcome in a specific programme and ask about practical work and assessment. Describe your process, experience and difficulties. The training centre can relate the content to your needs rather than only to the general word “documentation”.
